Legend has it that the Devil himself once invited a members of the church to a bean feast at the falls. While the beans were cooking in a pot heated by the fires of Hell the Devil drew too much heat and melted the rock around his foot, trapping him. Evidence of this inferno still remains.
Begin in the parking area located on the Milford and Lyndeborough line after Fitch's Dairy Farm. From there it is about a mile hike through the trails until you reach the lower part of Purgatory Falls. You can continue to follow the trail through Mount Vernon you will reach a small wooden bridge which will lead you to the middle and upper falls.
